Therefore God also highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Philippians 2:9-11 (NRSV)
It was over twenty years ago and I was working in retail. I remember going to lunch, sitting in my struggling with addictions and how to pay for my addictions. After my break I was confronted by my boss. I was let go from my job and in fact the main job that took care of me and my wife. It was a long time coming but I realized at that point I had an issue. The hardest thing for me was trying to get my nerve up to go tell my wife what had happened. I knew that she was either going to kick me out. I told her about everything and the first thing she said is “Thank you Lord!”
Why would she say that? What happened after that was a moment that sticks in me to this day. Instead of her kicking me out she proceeded to look at me and say that with God’s help we will get through this. My heart and my spirit leaped inside me. It was as if the Savior of the world had ushered Himself into my small apartment and gave me the biggest hug I have ever had.
The verse from Philippians tells us that Jesus is the name above all names and that every knee shall bow and confess HE is Lord. In that moment of worry and panic God became Lord of my life. It was then that I said HE is Lord, He is restorer and HE is healer over my life and it came through my wife just when I needed it. I would like to say that life got easier after that but it didn’t but my focus and my life became sold out to HIM. I am free from my addictions today and as the verse says, my tongue confesses that HE IS LORD!
As we move towards that great day of Christ coming back from the grave, let us keep our eyes on the cross but our focus on the resurrection. It is there that we find our resurrection as well.
Prayer: God, I thank you that in the deepest and darkest of places you find us. Even in those moments when life seems totally dark, it is there that your light shines through and allows us to bring glory and honor to Your Name. Amen.
