Taking Risks

“But God doesn’t call us to be comfortable. He calls us to trust Him so completely that we are unafraid to put ourselves in situations where we will be in trouble if HE doesn’t come through.” ― Francis Chan

If you read this quote what does that make you think of?  Maybe words like faith, risk, or trust.  I know we talk at church a lot about faith and trust especially when it comes to Christ.  What I do know is that the action of “risk” is a hard thing for most people to do.  Now in the outside world we take risks within our jobs, within our investments and many other things but when it comes to the church are we willing to step out of the boat in spite of the lack in our faith and abilities.

Following Christ sometimes calls for us to make crazy moves.  Sometimes those ideas or challenges do NOT make sense at all, especially to those around us.  What I want to challenge you on is that if we are following Christ with a full devotion then sometimes risk has to be a part of the decisions we make.

Let me give you some examples…I know a pastor that sold everything to move to an area where they felt God call them to be and God showed up in an amazing way.  I also know of a pastor that prayed for a piece of property for a church and every day that pastor would do a prayer walk around the property to see God claim ownership of the property.  I also know of a pastor that was willing to take a risk and pray that God remove cancer from a person and after the next visit to a doctor that person had a miraculous healing.  Please understand me I believe and know that God CAN do absolutely anything.  I have seen and experienced a lot in my short ministry life. I pray each day that God show me ways in which I can take amazing risks that have Kingdom affects.

You see a life in Christ is not all about comfort but in fact it can be more about risk taking than we can really imagine.  Paul says in Philippians 1:12-14 “Now I want you to know, brothers and sisters, that what has happened to me has actually served to advance the Gospel. As a result, it has become clear throughout the whole palace guard and to everyone else that I am in chains for Christ. And because of my chains, most of the brothers and sisters have become confident in the Lord and dare all the more to proclaim the Gospel without fear.”

I spent some time listening and talking to a Pastor named Peter Xu. It was one of the main founders of the underground church in China.  What I saw in the life of this man is a sense of risk and looking past fear to see people come to know Jesus.  His one question as his interpreter told me was:  “Where are all the leaders of the church that are willing to lose it all for the call of Christ on their lives and do it for the lives of others who do not know Christ?”  Are we willing to lose it all?  Are we willing to sacrifice comfort, sacrifice our desires or even sacrifice, in my denomination, our appointment for the sake of Christ and the Gospel?  You should hear his full testimony….amazing!

Without fear, with faith and all with a sense of risk.  It is time for all of us (me included) to take some huge risks when it comes to Kingdom efforts.  It is time to take a leap of faith and to risk everything for sake of the Gospel.  It really is that important.

“Our greatest fear should not be of failure but of succeeding at things in life that don’t really matter.”― Francis Chan
